The Springfield Armory XD Mod.2 5” Tactical semi-automatic polymer pistol has both 9x19 mm and .45 ACP versions. The striker-fired semi-automatics launched in 2016, and they are second generation derivations of the Springfield Armory XD series.
Springfield Armory launched its XD (eXtreme Duty) concealed carry polymer pistols in 2001 designed around pivot points of rich content, high performance, durability, ease of use and affordability. These guns are all matte black and characterized by many rounded corners across the slide and frame.
Safety is generally of paramount concern, especially when carrying. Springfield has a safety trident of a firing block safety, a rather discrete passive grip safety and its Ultra Safety Assurance Action Trigger System, which is what Springfield calls its safety trigger. Moreover, XDs have a loaded chamber indicator atop the slide. You can see it and/or feel it to know if a round is chambered or not. The back of the slide has a striker status indicator.
Durability and reliability come from several facets. One is the intrinsic design, and this is where striker-fired guns deliver big with fewer parts than their M1911 cousins. Fit and finish is very important. Then there are the materials and the finishes. Both slide and barrel have Melonite finishes for wear, tear and corrosion resistance.
XDs have dovetailed low-profile, combat sights at front and back, but since their sights are constantly on the receiving end of getting banged around or holstered, they are made of steel. More specifically, the XD MOD.2 5” has a red fiber-optic front sight and a two white dot sight in back.
The slide has front and rear serrations. The trigger guard is a rounded oval with subtle serrations on the front face that gently echo their brothers on the slide and the under muzzle Picatinny rail.
Moving down a bit, the magazine release is ambidextrous. Below the muzzle is the gun’s dual recoil spring system that decreases recoil. Under it is a three-slot Picatinny rail.
XD MOD.2 5” Tacticals have Grip Zone grips. These have medium texturing in front and back and smooth wide vertical bands on the sides. The frame narrows behind the trigger/above the grip for easier and more comfortable trigger reach. The magazine release is ambidextrous. There is no thumb safety, and the slide lock and decocker are on the gun’s left.
Back to the specifics of the Springfield Armory XD Mod.2 5” Tactical, the 5” refers to the gun’s barrel length. The twin stack magazine gun’s two models are the 9x19 mm and .45 ACP.
The 9 mm model is 5.5” tall, 1.2” wide, has an 8.3” overall length and weighs 29 ounces. The gun is a 16+1. The .45 ACP is 5.75” tall, 1.2” wide, has an 8.1” in overall length and weighs 31 ounces. The .45 ACP’s magazine capacity is 13 rounds making the gun a 13+1. The long slide gives a long sight radius permitting faster, more accurate aiming.
Each model comes with a pair of double-stack stainless steel magazines. The 1.2” widths are notable since they slot between the normal double-stack width and single-stack widths of many other guns. The Springfield Armory XD Mod.2 5” Tactical semi-automatic polymer pistols are Made in Croatia.
