The H&R 1871 Topper lineup includes the Topper Deluxe, Topper Deluxe Classic, Topper Jr., and Topper Jr. Classic single-shot break-action shotguns. Harrington & Richardson (H&R) is semi-synonymous with this niche and has been making them over 125 years since the 1890s.
Single-shot break-open architecture simplifies production, lowers costs, increases reliability. It makes these guns relatively light. They have a side-lever release and automatic ejection. Break open the gun and any spent casing ejects automatically. For safety, they include a Transfer Bar safety to practically eliminate accidental firing problems when a gun is dropped.
1871 Topper Deluxe Classic’s looks are fetching at first glance and again and again. The receiver looks great with its matte nickel-finish. The barrel is blued. The American black walnut forend and stock are beauties and are checkered. Both 12-gauge and 20-gauge feature 28” barrels topped by vented ribs and 43” overall lengths. The barrel is exclaimed by a bead front sight, and taking point is a screw-in Modified choke. At the barrel’s other end is the sturdy 3” chamber. In back is a ventilated recoil pad. Key metrics include a 14 1/4” length of pull, 1 1/4” drop at comb, 2 1/4” drop at heel and 34 ¼” overall length. With portability being paramount, weight is 6 to 7 pounds.
The standard Topper also stuns. It’s a 12-gauge with a 28” barrel and 43” overall length. Or you can get it in 20-gauge and .410 bore with 26” barrels and 41” overall lengths. Drop at comb is 1 ½”, which slopes down to 2 1/8” at the heel. Its nickel-finished receiver sits on a hull of splendid all-black hardwood stock that’s accompanied by a matching forend. It has a curved grip and a fixed choke. It’s otherwise like the aforementioned model. This trio ranges from 5 to 6 pounds in weight.
The Topper Deluxe is like the Topper but available only in 12-gauge. It adds a thick black buttpad, a larger 3 ½” chamber and a screw-in choke tube and weighs 6 ¾” pounds.
The Topper Junior with its nickel-finished receiver and black hardwood is like the standard Topper but, as you may have guessed, in a shorter 22” barrel, shorter 12 ½” length of pull and shorter 36” overall length. It’s available in 20-gauge and .410 bore and weighs 5 to 6 pounds.
The Topper Junior Classic takes the Topper Junior and adds a ventilated recoil pad. Its gauges and dimensions are the same as with the Topper Junior.
As you can see, the Topper lineup has plenty to offer in a reliable and attractive single-shot break-action shotgun.
