Introduced by Remington in 1997, its beginnings were as a wildcat cartridge known as the 6.5-08, a 308 necked down to the .264 bullet. Like many other wildcat cartridges, Remington brought on the 260 Remington for commercial release. The 260 Remington cartridge is also known as 6.5-08 A-Square. With a shorter overall length than the 6.5x55mm, the 260 Remington can be chambered in a shorter length bolt action.

This cartridge is great for rifle competition because of its high ballistic coefficients. It also works well for mid-range, or 1000 meter, sniping in smaller to midsized weapon systems. The 260 Remington has great trajectory and significantly lower recoil than the .300 Winchester Magnum. You can easily convert a rifle chambered for a .308 Winchester with a simple barrel change. The 260 Remington would also work well for military and law enforcement applications.
