.30-06 Rifle History & Ballistics

When the U.S. military knew they’d be shooting at targets over 1,000 yards away, they needed ammo that would stay the course. Their solution was the .30-06 cartridge in 1906 – the ”30” refers to the bullet caliber, and the “06” refers to the year the cartridge was adopted.

The first .30-06 rifle was the M1906 chambered with a 150-grain cupronickel-jacketed bullet. After World War I, needing to outperform the Japanese 6.5x50mm and 7.7x58mm Arisaka cartridges, the U.S. military upgraded the .30-06 cartridge to gilding metal, which proved more effective for long range shooting. The .30-06 cartridge remained in military use until the 1980s when it was replaced by the 7.62x51mm NATO and 5.56x45mm NATO.

The .30.06 rifle is one of the most versatile rifles; it rivals the performance of many magnum cartridges without the harsh recoil, and is one of the most popular rifles for hunting in North America. The .30.06 rifle is suitable for most small and large, heavy game.

.30-06 Rifle Basics

Today, the .30-06 rifle is popular for hunting and enjoyed by new shooters because of the lighter recoil. Many .30-06 rifles you’ll see on GunBroker.com are bolt action rifles, including the famous M1 Garand.
