Get familiar with .44 Special Ammo
Smith & Wesson began producing .44 Special ammo in 1907 to accompany the S&W Triple Lock New Century, a double-action revolver that was considered for many years to be the finest revolver ever made.
The new cartridge came about because of failed attempts to develop a smokeless powder cartridge version of the .44 Russian. Early smokeless powders lacked the energy density to perform as well as their predecessors and performed poorly in ballistic tests. To combat this problem, S&W lengthened the cartridge case, which in turn increased powder capacity.
The .44 Special was eclipsed in popularity during the 1950s with the release of the .44 Magnum, which resulted in a decline in manufacturing, but has come back into vogue for shooting hobbyists.
