45 Caliber History

The US Army and Cavalry had determined that handguns needed to be 45 caliber after disappointing performances from double action revolvers in 38 Long Colt during the Philippine-American War. Colt and Browning had been working together on a 41 caliber cartridge and simply crafted a 45 caliber equivalent when the Cavalry asked for a 45 caliber pistol design in 1905. Thus the Model 1905 and the 45 ACP cartridge were born.

Colt submitted these two products to the US military against a number of competitors and made it to the final round, offering the least malfunctions or disastrous parts failures. The 45 caliber pistol, rechristened the Model 1911, became a new standard in the US military and the 45 ACP remains a popular cartridge today with law enforcement and shooters looking for self-defense weapons.
