Choosing the right AR 15 ammo
If you’re shopping here, you’re probably familiar with the chamber your AR 15 has and what ammo it needs, but surprisingly, many shooters believe all AR 15 ammo can be loaded into their rifle. This can lead to blown primers, case-ejection failure and cracked receivers. The best AR 15 ammo depends on what type of chamber your rifle has, so we’re going to cover the most common.
The .223 Remington is the most common AR 15 chamber. They are chrome-lined, smaller and tighter according to SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) specs. These are not to be confused with .223 Match chambers, which rifles slower and reduces the risk of spilling unspent powder.
The 5.56 Mil-Spec chamber is chrome lined and larger because the AR 15 ammo is loaded hotter and accommodates higher chamber pressure. It has a longer throat than the .223 chamber and can safely handle both 5.56 NATO ammo and .223 ammo.
