About the AR-15
The AR-15 was introduced in 1959 by Armalite to serve the U.S. military. Financial problems led to the company selling the design to Colt, who redesigned the rifle and named it the M16. Civilians were able to purchase semiautomatic versions (Colt AR-15) in 1963.
Today, multiple manufacturers, including Armalite, Colt, Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, Stag Arms and Ruger produce versions.
Give and Receiver
If you're new to firearms, you may not be familiar with what exactly the lower receiver is and does. The receiver is the part of the gun that is home to the operating mechanisms and parts. Most of the time the receiver also holds the magazine and trigger mechanisms. It can also be referred to as the body or frame. U.S. law considers the receiver to be the actual firearm itself. As a result, its sale is controlled and restricted.
The AR-15 has a lower and an upper receiver. The upper receiver comprises the barrel, bolt, charging handle and gas system.
