Designed by Eugene Stoner in 1957, the AR-15 has been used in service since 1958. It entered the U.S. military system as the M16 rifle in 1963, though today semi-automatic versions are still referred to as the AR-15. Originally built by ArmaLite (hence the "AR") and sold to Colt, there have since been many AR-15 manufacturers including Sig Sauer, Remington Arms and Smith & Wesson. Featuring either direct impingement or rotating bolt action, the fully automated version of an AR-15 can fire upward of 800 rounds per minute and reach an effective range of 400 to 600 meters. Staggered-column magazines that hold 20 or 30 rounds are available, as are traditional box magazines that hold 40 or 45 rounds. Drum magazines with 90 or 100 round capacities are another option. Accessories-wise, the AR-15 can be equipped with vertical forward grips, night vision devices, lighting systems, muzzle brakes, sound suppressors, etc.
