The AR15 lower receiver contains the trigger and hammer assemblies as well as the housing for the magazine. The lower receiver also connects the grip, the stock and the buffer assembly. This is the AR15 part that is classified by law as a “firearm” and comes with its own serial number. One can purchase either a full lower, or a stripped lower depending on the level of customization desired.
AR15 upper receivers come in three major varieties: M4 feed ramps, A2 and A4 uppers. The M4 feed ramps allow for smoother feeding of magazine and is the most popular choice. A2 uppers have a carry handle built directly into the receiver and A4 uppers has a flat top for attachments. Like with lower receivers, one can buy a full kit or a bare upper for full customization.
Just as with the other AR15 parts, AR15 barrels come in a variety of styles. Rifle length barrels are around 13 inches and take 12 inch hand guards and rails. Mid-length barrels are around 10 inches and take 9 inch and allows for the best bolt cycling. Carbine (M4) barrels are around 8 inches and take a 7 inch hand guard. The carbine barrel is a military standard, but has the harshest recoil of the three options. AR15 barrels also come in heavy and light variations. Heavy barrels are the slowest to heat up, and have the lowest propensity for barrel flex. Lightweight barrels are just as they sound, lighter than the heavy barrels but also heat up faster and have a higher chance of barrel flex.
Sights & Optics
Being able to quickly acquire and aim down a target is essential for any shooter. This is made easier with the right AR15 sights and optics. AR15 rifles come standard with iron sights, but more popular are red dot sights made by manufacturers like EOTech, and Mepro. Another option is a full scope, but remember that the maximum effective range for an AR15 is around 600 yards so don’t go overboard with the magnification. Those who choose electronic sights should consider flip-up iron sights as a backup if your electronics system was to fail.
When collecting AR15 parts for your new project, don’t forget to consider accessories as they may determine what kind of parts you choose. GunBroker.com has all kinds of AR15 accessories like bipods for steady shooting, fore grips for improved control and accuracy, and torchlights, flashlights, and lasers for improved visibility and aiming. Also available are flash hiders to minimize muzzle flash, muzzle breaks to reduce recoil, and muzzle compensators to reduce muzzle climb.
GunBroker.com sellers update their auction listings frequently, so if you're looking to buy AR15 parts or reloading equipment check back often.
