Polymer’s benefits are numerous: decreased weight, decreased cost and increased portability. The Armscor/Rock Island Armory MAPP 9 mm DA/SA semi-automatic uses polymer construction to deliver a beautiful high value gun at a low price of entry.

There are two sizes that, other than dimension and capacity, are configured essentially the same. The 10+1 capacity MAPP MS - 9mm is medium size (hence the “MS” rubric) while the larger 16+1 capacity MAPP FS - 9mm is full size (thus “FS”).

The RIA MAPP MS - 9 mm has a 3.6” barrel with six grooves and a 1 to 16” twist ratio. It weighs 1.65 pounds unloaded. Throw in a loaded magazine, and weight climbs to a still modest 2.07 pounds. Length is 7.5”, height is 5.3.

The RIA MAPP FS - 9 mm has a 4.6” barrel with six grooves and a 1 to 16” twist ratio. Length is 8.25” and height is 5.5”, giving the gun nice visual balance. Unloaded weight is 1.87 pounds

In either size, the RIA MAPP 9 mm has an integrated white dot front sight and a twin white dot long-ramp snag-free dovetailed rear sight. Both the frame and slide are Parkerized, a rugged but great looking finish Rock Island uses extensively across its product line. The slide has diagonal serrations only in back. Nearby, the hammer has a circular rather than oval loop. The beavertail is medium and only barely upturned.

Other than the trigger, all primary controls are on the left. Thus this includes the thumb safety, the slide stop and the ovoid magazine release. The thumb safety isn’t a slave to M1911 architecture and actually sits a bit forward of the typical M1911 position. It’s also a different shape with a racetrack oval lever instead of the M1911’s more common winged one.

In single action, trigger pull runs 4 to 7 pounds. Double action, the numbers are 14 to 15 pounds. The trigger has a deep curve and sits inside an upturned trigger guard that leads back to a fairly deep undercut. The recoil spring housing cap is flush with the muzzle bushing. Underneath the housing is a nice touch in the form of a two-slot Picatinny accessory rail.

The grip sports polymer grip panels with consistent ridge texturing on all four planes.
