Description for Item # 329587667

This is a very nice example of the relatively scarce Model 1888 Springfield Rod Bayonet Rifle in .45-70 caliber that is unit marked. This rifle is serial number 560191, which was made in 1893, the last year of production for the Trapdoor Rifles and was one of the last made (last Trapdoor serial number is 568,325). Only 4,760 Ramrod Bayonet Rifles were made that year and only about 10% of all Trapdoors were Ramrod types. Stock is original Springfield with "SWP/1893" Cartouche, indicating Samuel W. Porter, who was Springfield's Master Armorer at the time. Has Script "P" firing proof. Left stock flat is also marked with original painted unit marking "H/6/52." Barrel has V/P/Eagle Head/P proofs with "A" barrel inspector's mark. Breech Block is correct 7th Type marked "US/MODEL/1884." Still has generous amounts of original color case hardened finish inside. Lock Plate is correct 4th Type with taller "SPRINGFIELD" letters. Has the correct 3rd Type Trigger with serrations. Correct 1885 dished Lower Barrel Band for rear sight. Has Model 1888 Rod Bayonet Butt Plate. Rod Bayonet mechanism works perfectly. Has correct 4th Type Front Sight Blade and correct Model 1884 Buffington Rear Sights, 2nd Type. Stock is in excellent condition with normal dings and scratches. Barrel is in excellent condition and is still shiny with strong rifling. This would still be a great shooter. This weapon is an antique so it can be shipped to anyone. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like additional photos posted.
