Description for Item # 330150546

This Jeffery double rifle in 8 Bore was made in 1893 and is, as they say, the real thing. With 24” barrels having somewhere between a 1:68” and 1:72” twist in the 11 groove rifling it’s clear that bullets between 950 and 1200 grains will be stabilized nicely at 1500 or so feet per second delivering in the neighborhood of 6800 foot pounds of energy to whatever happens to be very unlucky that day – twice. With the Empire’s numerous (while far flung) pockets of dangerous game, the London gun makers responded to officer’s and gentleman’s requests for something of a “stopper”. So the 8 Bore was refined. Only a few makers rose to the top and Jeffery was a pioneer there. This example features a round body Jones type under lever action which was chosen for its extreme reliability, durability and strength. The 5/8” wide rib is matted from the doll’s head to the express sight and again from the muzzle to 4-1/2” behind it. The front sight is a tapered bead of platinum while both the 50 and 200 sights have a thin platinum centerline inlay. The locks are appropriately large back action with rebounding hammers. There is tight floral engraving on the doll’s head and screw heads while the locks, guards, tangs, grip cap, forend iron and frame have a tastefully simple line bordering with subtle flourishes here and there. The stocks are beautifully figured walnut with single border checkering and the wood has that great depth that only age brings. Sling hook eyes are present on the lower barrel rib and the butt toe line. It appears that the original horn or hard rubber butt plate has been faced off to a thickness of 5/16” (5/8” at the point of the heel tang) on to which a ¾” custom pad has been glued (LOP is 13-3/8” & 14-3/8”). It weighs in at 17 pounds, one ounce. This rifle was made to put ivory on the bearer’s back and it certainly did.
Markings: The rib in front of the express sight is engraved: “W.J. Jeffery & Co 60 Queen Victoria St. London. E.C.” while the top of the right tube behind the express sight reads: “Jeffery Rifles Hold The Highest Record” continued on the left tube: “In The World For Accuracy Of Shooting”. The water table bears two London View proofs while each barrel is marked with that, the definitive London black powder proof and two others.
Condition: The stocks are completely sound with no cracks, slits or repairs to same. At some point in the past they were refinished and that retains its gloss from the recoil pad forward about 4” (where we believe it had been protected by a lace-on recoil pad) while the unprotected balance has dulled with handling. The recoil pad can be slightly lifted on the left side as the adhesive there needs some touch up. The stocks have thinly scattered light to moderate handling marks with a few heavier ones here and there. The barrels are blended brown and grey patina with a few scattered old patches of micro pitting mostly around the midpoint of the right barrel and are thought to be from bloody finger prints. (Given their position it’s possible that a gun bearer might have gripped it there whilst carrying it over his shoulder. If his hands had the slightest residue of blood from the capeing or butchering operations the salts would have attacked the steel with great alacrity. Arriving back at camp late that day only the bores were cleaned and it was set aside without a complete wipe down – so goes the theory). The bores are perfect - a condition rarely encountered with black powder cartridge firearms of this age. All other metal is mostly a pleasing gray patina with a little nicely blended brown and vestiges of case color in the protected areas. The breech is 100% on face with no movement of any kind, even with the forearm removed. Both locks perform perfectly.
Dies, Mold and Ammunition: This fantastic rifle comes with 20 rounds of loaded ammunition, one box (25 pc.) of 1140 grain .845” lead bullets, one box (25 pc.) of 1200 grain .845” lead bullets (both from Precision Reloading Inc.), a custom made bullet mold in like new condition and a custom made 3 die reloading set in like new condition. Both mold and dies were made specifically for this rifle.
Conclusion: This is a bespoke double made for a hunter of means who wanted an utterly reliable “stopper”. The absence of inlays and ornate engraving while all things mechanical being top flight, indicates that this rifle was made for someone who was going to get down to the business, in the most serious terms, of hunting the most dangerous game in the world. It was obviously used to that end and cared for with great attention given the bores and mechanism. Its initial superlative quality, attentive care over the last 119 years and matching quality modern accoutrements make this a real prize for the vintage large bore enthusiast. (Also; When you hold it in your hands you can feel the old hunts like they were yesterday.) If you have questions please email us at tangoyankee_llc@yahoo.com
