THE TOWN

Long Prairie, MN is a clean, growing, nearly crime-free County Seat community of 3,500 with an old-fashioned main street and a 24 hour grocery store. Located approximately 2 hours northwest of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area, Long Prairie boasts modern schools, several churches, a variety of industry, and many amenities. Long Prairie has a municipal airport with a 3,000 foot paved, lighted runway and an arrival/departure building with bathroom facilities. A courtesy car is available 24 hours a day. The Long Prairie Hospital is part of the Centracare Hospital in St.Cloud, which is a major, highly acclaimed heart care facility. Our local hospital has the longest-running midwife program in Minnesota. Long Prairie has a beautiful 18 hole golf course and several other excellent golf courses are located only minutes away. Lots of shopping is available nearby - Alexandria 30 minutes, Brainerd or St. Cloud, only about an hour drive. Trails, hunting, and fishing galore may be found in every direction! The area is dotted with clean lakes with plenty of public access. Lake Osakis and Big Sauk Lake are both only about 15 minutes away from your door!

THE PROPERTY

This home was designed by artists with a strong background in architecture. Recently featured in On the Road with Jason Davis, it has the flavor of an old house but with a wonderful spacious feeling and all the amenities, conveniences, and efficiency of a new house. Local people call it The Castle. By its unique look you can tell this place is something special the moment you see it. From the street you're greeted by lots of potted flowers, a brick-paved driveway and parking area, and shade gardens. As you approach the front door you know you're in the right place by the custom made porcelain-on-steel address sign.

Situated on an oversize, 82' X 157.5' lot, this house was green before green became the buzzword of the day. Walls are constructed of 2X6 framing and roof trusses are nearly 2-1/2 feet thick, with almost two feet of insulation. Upper floors in the main part of the house are supported by a post and beam framework. Siding is 12" natural rough-sawn cedar board and batten. A 10' X 20' screen porch allows for the enjoyment of meals or conversation in shaded, breezy comfort, without the annoyance of mosquitos or other insects. There are 3 bedrooms and 3-1/2 baths. More of either could be easily added with light repurposing of existing space.

Just off the front porch is an enclosed entryway, an ideal spot for removal of jackets and boots. This space provides an air lock to keep out summer heat or winter winds when entering or exiting. Once inside, there's a convenient entry closet right next to the front door. The communication center nearby provides the perfect location for telephone, computer, printer, and the like. An L-shaped countertop has plenty of space to work on projects or for use as a home office.

Entertaining is fun and easy in this home. The gourmet kitchen features a Wolf range housed within a rustic brick arch with a commercial exhaust fan. A second, conveniently located full-size convection oven makes baking quick and simple. The baking area, complete with its own sink and stainless steel countertop keeps the messy projects confined to a manageable space. This kitchen has a large commercial type cabinet-depth refrigerator, and the most gorgeous Brazilian granite countertops you've ever seen. Three or four people can simultaneously prepare food in this kitchen without anyone getting in someone else's way. The glossy red cabinets make very efficient use of space and the tile floor is easy to clean. An energy efficient Bosch dishwasher ensures that cleanup is quick, easy, and quiet, with frugal use of water. The roomy, adjacent informal dining area makes guests feel at home as they gather near the kitchen.

An inviting 16X20 living room is flanked by 20 feet of bookcases and a row of clerestory windows to let in light while retaining privacy.

A large common area lies on the other side of the bookcases, next to the living room. This space would make an ideal exercise room or play area for children. A nice half bath is adjacent to this roomy spot. With very few interior walls, children can be supervised from almost anywhere in this home.

At the opposite end of the house, a handy kitchenette is located conveniently near the screen porch and the enclosed outdoor grilling "cook shack". Ample cabinets can be filled with china, flatware, and wine glasses to accommodate many guests. A tuck-under refrigerator holds extra food or drinks. There is a second dining table at this end of the house in case you'd rather eat indoors instead of in the screen porch. The spacious back yard with its wonderful herb garden is fenced for privacy.

A corner office is situated next to another bathroom which is perfectly located for cleaning up after coming in from gardening or hobby projects.

The 16X32 basement features plenty of shelving, two closets, and a fully functional wine cellar.

An oversize 24' X 24' attached, insulated garage and two storage rooms finish off the ground level. The garage has has 10' ceilings and two 10' X 7'6" doors with new, quiet operators. Behind the garage there are two storage areas. One is an 8' X 12' pantry, accessible from either the house or the garage. The other is a secure, lockable 8' X 12' storage room. Both have 10' ceilings.

A 16X36 two story shop is connected to the back of this home by an enclosed walkway. It is well suited for either hobby or business use. The large upper floor has a huge amount of storage space. At the end of the shop, only a few steps from the screen porch is an enclosed grilling area with connections for a natural gas grill and an electric range.

This home feels light and spacious with vast open areas supported by post frame, and cathedral ceilings throughout. If you choose not to use the air conditioning, remote electric operators can open and close the 3' X 5' awning windows in the 6' X 6' central cupola for natural ventilation. There are three bedrooms and three and a half baths. More of either could be easily added if desired. The master bedroom/bath suite features a tub/shower bay, two walk-in closets, and an eight foot countertop. Two additional large bedrooms have cathedral ceilings, lofts, and 12 foot countertops. These two bedrooms share a full bath with tub/shower bay and two vanities, one inside and one outside. Laundry facilities are conveniently located between the three bedrooms. A large media room with access to an outdoor balcony completes the upper level.

This beautiful home would lend itself well to use as a gunsmith shop, bed-and-breakfast, catering business, or a host of other home businesses.
