US COMBAT GASMASK BAG - RUBBERIZED CANVAS - US WWII

The army started using waterproof gas mask bags during ww2. The goal was to keep the filter dry, so that it would be effective. Of course we now know gas was not generally used. This bag is in nice shape. The mask is gone, and just a can of lens cleaner remains. It does not have general handling scratches, so it was not issued. These bags are known to have been issued to US troops prior to the D-day Normandy invasion, Market Garden, and other campaigns. I heard of accounts from Dday that said the GIs would throw away the gas masks, and filled the bags with ammunition. They were more worried about keeping their ammo dry. This bag has 3 snaps. It has the markings as clearly seen in the pics "US U-L Army Combat Service Gas Mask". There are green straps and hooks as seen in the pictures. I read that there are several different types, some with 4 snaps, and some with 3, and different markings. There are a number of pictures, and no other markings other than what you see. No holes or major marks. Really a nice piece that helps finish out that display...
