Mis. Laguiole Lore.
Laguiole is translated as "La Gleisola" which means little church. Laguiole is a small mountain town in Southern France which was built around a small chapel. The knife that we have come to know as the "Laguiole" was developed starting sometime in the early 1800's. At a spot called The three Bishops Cross. It was said that Sheppard's' would stick their knives in the ground at this spot and pray. It is said to be inspired by the Arabo-Hispanic Navaja knife which had a distinctive pistol grip handle. The Laguiole "bee" is the decoration on the spring sliplock . There is some debate about whether this is a "fly" or a "bee". One story states the use of the bee, an imperial symbol, was granted by Napoleon in recognition of the courage of local soldiers. Much more history than I can list in this space. Mis. Damascus Care Info
Fine damascus needs extra care compared to other steels. Fine damascus should NEVER be stored in a leather sheath. The sheath is really just for carrying it around. Damascus steel loves to rust and should NEVER be run through the dish washer and needs cleaning and a very light film of oil after handling and use. Be sure to remove any finger prints. Best to store it in the wrappings it shipped in or something similar or stored where the steel is not touching anything else. Damascus kitchen knives are a little like cast iron pans. If you keep it well seasoned it will never rust and rarely stain. Staining while not good looking is cosmetic only. Will not affect it's performance in any way.
