Description for Item # 331486551

Handmade flintlock Kentucky-type rifle, barrel stamped R. E. Heasley #31 to Joe. The stock of the rifle shows a fancy American eagle inlay on the right cheek piece, some light engraving on the mounts, the patch box is engraved with a Marine Corps emblem and with a facsimile of Joe Foss’ fighter plane with I.D.# V. M. F. 121 and also is inscribed Guadalcanal 1942 on top with Lander, Wyo., 1972, on bottom. A copy of “American Rifleman” in June 1978 shows Joe Foss accepting a Kentucky rifle and powder horn. Peter Oppenheizen obtained this exact Kentucky rifle from legendary Joe Foss in the early 1990s when he had occasion to meet this famous ace pilot in the Phoenix area. Joe Foss is recognized by the American Fighter Aces Association as the top Ace of Aces of WWII and tied with Eddie Rickenbacker WWI as the top US Aces of all time with 26 confirmed & witnessed kills. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by FDR On May 18, 1943. he went on to become the youngest Governor of South Dakota @ 39 in 1955. Foss hosted ABC television's The American Sportsman from 1964 to 1967, which took him all over the world for hunting and fishing excursions. After serving as governor, Foss spent a short time working for Raven Industries before becoming the first Commissioner of the newly-created American Football League in 1959. Starting in 1988, Foss was elected to two consecutive one-year terms as president of the National Rifle Association. In his later years he maintained a rigorous speaking schedule and spoke out for conservative causes on what he considered a weakening of gun owners' rights.
