U.S. Model 1872 Officer’s Sword & Scabbard. Stock # SP COMM. One of MANY swords and edged weapons of all types we have for sale at Jackson Armory, this is a Custer-Period (Indian Wars Period) U.S. Model 1872 Officer’s Sword and metal scabbard. The ‘Staff & Field “ sword of it’s day (mostly carried by the ranks of Major, and higher) the sword has a 27 ½” slightly curved blade, and is 33” in overall length. There is no Maker’s marking on the ricasso or anywhere on the sword, we do not know who the maker was, but the construction looks to be American-made, although we can’t guarantee that. The sword has an ornate brass guard and pommel cap, with engraved stars, a Federal Eagle, and a Federal shield on the pommel. The grip is leather covered, and the brass wrap (and leather) is still intact. The brass guard and pommel, as well as the brass fittings on the scabbard have a great aged patina. The blade has no dings, and it is straight, it does have quite a bit of minor freckling. The scabbard has ornate brass fittings and a brass drag, which is also ornate. The scabbard has no dents, but it does have considerable freckling and patina. Overall condition of the sword and scabbard rates about 85%. This is a nice sword, produced just a few years after the Civil War, it’s a honest sword that has not been polished or messed-with, and it will look great displayed in your collection.
