MINTY ANTIQUE SILVER ENGRAVED TORTOISE SHELL POCKET CASE

This is a Minty, Elegant, Antique, Hallmarked Tortoise Shell Silver Engraved Cigarette Case with intricately engraved silver frame, clasp and inside hinged hold down bar. This well made, quality piece measures 4 5/8" wide x 3" deep x only 7/16" thick, and weighs 3.3 ounces. The Hallmarks on the bottom front edge are 800 and a Maker's Mark in the shape of a coffin, with what appears to be 102 to the left of a dividing line and an F1 to the right. It is very hard to make out; but the 800 silver mark and style of engraving & gold gilding strongly suggests this is an Italian piece. They are known for fine, fancy decorative personal items such as this. The entire piece is finely hand engraved silver, except for the original top and bottom tortoise shell panels. The top and bottom of the silver frame is rounded, with a finely engraved chevron pattern. Below the top frame edge is a flat panel finely engraved in an Art Deco pattern. The upper edge of the bottom frame has a flat panel with zig zag engraving. The clasp is also engraved on the bottom side. The back hinge has 11 sections, and covers the entire back length of the case, and is engraved in a different pattern; making 3 engraving patterns on the back side. The inside hinged bar has a fancy double panel engraving in a stylized Art Deco leaf pattern with a nail nick at the end for opening. The inside bar opens & closes properly, and the two halves of the case snap when closed and stays tightly closed. The inside is gold gilded, with nice traces remaining. The outside tortoise shell panels are intact, with no damage or repairs. These tortoise shell panels are soft, and if viewed with magnification, there are very fine, minuscule scratches to the surface. These add genuineness and age to the piece, but could easily be buffed out by a jeweler to perfect if desired. I found one almost imperceptible ding on the back middle of the frame, and is almost impossible to see; otherwise, this piece is in perfect lightly used condition. This beautiful object d`art would be an eye appealing gift as an elegant cigarette case, dresser accent piece, desk accessory, jewelry box or conversation / display piece.
