Very scarce Imperial German Mauser M.71/84 jaeger rifle with Canadian Quebec Home Guard markings! Caliber: 11 x 60R.
After entering the Great War in 1914, Canada decided to establish a number of Home Guard units. One of them was the Quebec Home Guard created by the City of Quebec. About three to four hundred of surplus M.71/84 infantry and jaeger rifles were purchased by the City of Quebec for their Quebec Home Guard unit from Bannerman in New York in 1914. They were the only Mauser rifles ever issued to the Canadian military! The right side of the buttstock displays Quebec Home Guard property markings, "QHG 9" (please, see pictures). The rifle comes complete with an Italian Vetterli bayonet (correct for the Quebec Home Guard issue M.71/84 rifles - it is believed that Italian Vetterli bayonets were also purchased by the City of Quebec from Bannerman in New York!). The rifle was manufactured at the Spandau arsenal in 1886, as indicated by markings on the receiver and barrel. M.71/84 jaeger rifle is similar to M.71/84 infantry rifle, except for the extra sling swivel added to the butt stock, behind the trigger guard. All matching serial numbers, including the screws. Matching serial numbers are stamped on the receiver, barrel, bolt, buttplate, trigger guard, both barrel bands, nosecap, bolt release, front and rear trigger guard screws, the stock main screw, both buttplate screws and on the rear sights. All the serial numbers are original and they were not restamped. Numerous German proofs are clearly visible on metal and stock. The octagonal part of the barrel displays Prussian Crown above the name of the Spandau arsenal. Left side of the barrel displays Prussian Crown over "FW" (Frederick Wilhelm, King of Prussia). The buttplate tang displays Imperial German regimental markings, "10. R. 16.178" (The 10th Infantry Regiment). Mauser M.1871/84 is an improved, repeating version of M.1871, with the major difference being a presence of a tubular magazine under the barrel. The magazine capacity is eight rounds. The ammo elevator mechanism was also added beneath the bolt. The magazine is loaded through the top of the open action. CONDITION: Low excellent. Metal has 88-90% of original blue finish. Most of the finish wear is on the barrel bands, nosecap and trigger guard. Some finish is turning to brownish color, mainly on the nosecap and trigger guard. Receiver is left in white (polished steel), as it should be. The bore is in excellent+ condition with shiny and sharp rifling! Strong action. Mechanically the rifle is in excellent condition, as well. All the internal parts of the rifle are in excellent condition, with no visible wear. Very nice and solid stock with some handling marks and light dings. Very crisp Prussian markings on the stock (Gothic letters under the crown, please, see pictures). The bayonet is in fine+ condition. Very scarce the City of Quebec issue Mauser 71/84 jaeger rifle with bayonet! Serial# 27XX. Antique.
Shipping is $30 in the continental U.S., actual shipping cost overseas. Personal checks will be held for 12 days or until cleared by the bank. For more information and additional pictures, please visit our web site. (mau_0654).
