This is a nice example of a Confederate Foot Officer's Sword manufactured by W. J. McElroy Confederate sword maker in Macon, Ga. during the war. This sword was housed in a privately owned museum in northern Florida for many years and was purchased at auction when the museum closed along with other confederate items from the collection. This sword definitely "saw the elephant". It has its original blood-stained sword knot and has the original red hat cord attached to the hilt. It is housed in an authentic period Confederate-made leather scabbard. Though not an original McElroy scabbard, it has been with the sword for a long time and fits well, so we are not looking to separate them. The scabbard too was made by a Confederate maker during the war. The sword has its nice original grip. It has a nice original patina with very light peppery pitting on the blade. The blade, handle and guard all have a little play, typical with an item this age. This is an unmarked example, a rare find since it is a completly un-engraved blade.
