Original 2nd. Model Transitional LeMat Revolver. This unique firearm was designed by Dr. Jean Alexandre Francois LeMat of New Orleans, La. With the assistance of his partner, General Pierre G. T. Beairegard, he secured a contract from the Confederate States of America, from both the C.S. Army and Navy. The LeMat revolver features a 9-shot .42 caliber cylinder, with a smoothbore shotgun barrel of approx. .63 caliber. The top of the hammer is fitted with a pivoting striker that could be rotated to fire the .42 rounds or pivoted downward to fire the shotgun barrel. This LeMat revolver, serial number 516, is in excellent condition. It is in fine working order. All numbers are matching, with the block letters L & M below a five pointed star on the right side of the
barrel. This transitional model has the spur trigger guard with the full octagonal barrel & loading lever on the left side. The barrel inscription reads: "Col. LeMat Bte sgdcParis.
The cylinder is in excellent condition as are all of the nipples. The bore has sharp lands and grooves with some minor pitting close to muzzle.
The total quantity LeMats manufactured is est. at less than 2,900. Far fewer are estimated to have made it through the union blockade and into Confederate hands. This is a very rare and desirable Confederate handgun.
