Description for Item # 333219942

This auction is for for a beautiful and original American Revolutionary War period Powder Horn that is named and dated. This fine horn just came out of a Virginia estate and is fresh to the market. The powder horn measures approx. 17 inches around the outside curve. It is named "William B. Verge" and dated "NOVB 4 80" which of course would translate to November 4th, 1780. It has a wonderful Pennsylvania Dutch style pinwheel engraved in it also and another type of wheel or compass with 8 circles. It also has some later scratch carved initials "HM". The horn is in wonderfully preserved condition and retains its wooden stopper also. The bottom plug looks to be a period replacement, with small and large nails present. It has a wonderful period honey brown patina and very nice period wear that shows this horn was well carried and used. A fine historical horn with American Revolutionary War provenance. I have not been able to research much on the name, but the family name of "Verge" of from the French. E-mail me with any questions.
