1863 Springfield 3’rd Model Allen Conversion Rifle. Stock # SK-AUM-3-EE. Serial # 151xx. One of several HUNDRED antique firearms for sale at Jackson Armory, this is the Third Model Allen Conversion of the 1863 Springfield Rifle, basically a conversion of a Civil War percussion muzzleloader to .50-70 centerfire cartridge use by means of a “trapdoor” style of conversion. The rifle is in great condition, it has some patina and mild freckling, all the markings are crisp and visible, including “US” on top of the lock and on the buttplate. The Lock has the Federal Eagle and is marked “US SPRINGFIELD” and dated 1863. The stock has some dings and service marks, but overall it is nice, and you can still faintly see a cartouche just below the trapdoor on the left side. Serial numbers on the barrel and receiver are matching. The bore is slightly dark, the action works correctly, and overall condition of the rifle is about 85%. This is a historically significant rifle that saw Yankee use during the Civil War, and after the war was converted to cartridge use for the Indian Wars. This rifle will display very nicely, and it will be a nice addition to your collection.
