Description for Item # 388147173

D/A-006-F- (9085)-JFC- U.S. MODEL 1817 COMMON RIFLE, in flintlock, has been sporterized by shortening the barrel to 30”, and cutting off the trigger guard tail that held the rear sling swivel. Front sling swivel and two barrel bands missing when the wood was shortened as well. The bore has been reamed out long ago, from a rifled .54 caliber, to the standard musket ammunition of .69 cal. Smoothbore. The obvious intention was to convert this arm to a more useful and more powerful cavalry arm, probably by the Confederates. Most lock markings are obliterated by rust and wear, but lock plate dated 1824. Barrel arsenal markings; “LS US”, and “P” proofed. Couple other lines of stamped markings in top of barrel, seem to be regimental; “CONd HA”, and, “4th….” The rest are hard to make out. Tang dated 1824. Retains the original, though shortened a bit, steel ramrod. Good open rear and front sights. An oval inspector’s cartouche mark in wood on left side. One lock plate bolt is replaced. Original oval patch box intact (missing latch spring to hold it closed.) Good US marked butt plate. Overall length, 45 ½ inches. All metal surfaces in aged brown patina. Sound walnut stock. A very scarce U.S. issued rifle, these served well throughout the western and border clashes in the early days of American expansion. Many showed up at the Alamo, against Santa Anna’s Mexican army. Found with some other guns in a horse barn outside of Cody, Wyoming in 2008. Lock is working, but kind of worn, could use a little tuning up to work better. A great American frontier heirloom. All original, as-is.SAFETY NOTICE: We do not sell firearms, only collectible antiques, if you shoot them it is at your own risk and we are not liable for anything you do.
