Barrett MRAD (Multi-role Adaptive Design) is 10+1 bolt action semi-automatic. It’s an extraordinary, modular, precision rifle built around a folding stock and swappable barrels. This techware spans .308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmore, .338 Lapua Magnum (LM), .338 Norma Magnum (NM), .300 NM, .300 Precision Rifle Cartridge (PRC), and .300 Winchester Magnum (WM). Each caliber is available in matte black, FDE and tungsten gray. These colors swathe receiver, handguard and stock’s metal bits while all else remains black.

Most guns seem like minor or medium evolutions of stable siblings or competitors. In contrast, the high-tech MRAD seems revolutionary. It’s as if each bit has been examined to see what is necessary and what isn’t. It’s sculpted from one end to the other. The front has a two-chamber muzzle brake backed by a serrated grip band. The barrel is fluted along its length. The fluting adds surface area for heat dissipation and decreases weight.

MRAD’s modular architecture means you can loosen four Torx screws to swap your current barrel with any of seven others for different lengths and different calibers.

The handguard is simply an extension of the upper receiver, which Barrett terms a monolithic upper receiver. It’s made of 7000-series aluminum. Regardless of barrel length, which we’ll get to shortly, the MRAD has a full-length 21.75” Picatinny top rail and M-LOK ovals along the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock surfaces. You get three accessory rails to attach to them. The handguard is also perforated by ovoid lightening cuts on the diagonal surfaces. They look great and cut weight. The precise MK-22 bolt movement is housed in a polymer guide. The bolt has a fast 45-degree throw made with a spherical bolt knob. The two-position safety is ambidextrous, so it can be installed on either side.

The lower receiver (grip) has a part-waffle pattern around the relief cut mag well that matches the waffle pattern on the magazines. The trigger guard is oversized. The trigger is fully adjustable. The ambidextrous paddle mag release nestles between the magwell and the trigger guard. The trigger group is designed for easy removal for easy maintenance. The pistol grip is black, textured on both sides and horizontally serrated in front and back. It also has a storage compartment.

The stock shares the same aesthetic in color and style as the receiver/grip/handguard. However, it’s a separate component that folds to the right. It is highly skeletonized and has both an adjustable black polymer cheek riser and adjustable length of pull thick black rubber butt pad. Barrett cleverly infused many small touches such as the numbers engraved at the cheek rest riser posts so you can easily remember and return to your favorite setting. The cheek rest is reversible with two different cheek profiles.

The gun’s engineering and architecture are clever. Yet the overall effect is detailed without being busy, functional without being overdone, feature rich while remaining intuitive, etc.

The .308 is the smallest and lightest of the bunch. You can get it with either a 17” or a 24” barrel. Overall length is 40.4” and 47.4” respectively and weight is 11.9 pounds or 13.3 pounds respectively. The 6.5 Creedmore has a 24” barrel which matches the .308 24” in overall length and weight. All three have 1:8” twist ratios.

The .338 LM, .338 NM, .300 NM, .300 PRC, and .300 WM, have 26” barrels, 49.4” overall lengths and weigh 14.5 pounds. The .300 NM, .300 PRC, and .300 WM also have 1:8” twist ratios while the .338 LM and .338 NM have slightly slower 1:9.4” twists. Thus, their shots make just under three full rotations before exploding past the muzzle brake.

What else? You get a 10-round waffle-pattern magazine that couples to a waffle-pattern magwell. The fully adjustable two-stage trigger is in a large, rounded corner rectangle big enough for gloved hand operations. In between is the mag release and behind is an almost straight-leg M4/M16-type pistol grip.

Barrett is located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and is ISO 9001:2015 Certified. This gun is Made in USA.
