Barrett Firearms Manufacturing

Founded in 1982 Barrett Firearms Manufacturing now makes both firearms and ammunition, however the company was founded with the sole goal of creating semi-automatic rifles chambered for 12.7x99mm NATO ammunition, also known as .50 BMG. With the first working model dubbed the M82, after the year of its debut, founder Ronnie Barrett financed his business himself until finally gaining a significant foothold on the market in 1989. Barrett went on to establish a successful line of .50 BMG rifles, including more affordable and lightweight bolt action rifles like the M95 and M99. Barrett Firearms Manufacturing was on its way.

Early customers included the US armed forces which deployed the M82 in the Gulf War. The M82 was also used by the IRA against the British Armed Forces and by forces in the Bosnian and Kosovo Wars. Today Barrett sniper rifles are still popular with various armed forces around the world due to their power, accuracy and effectiveness against most lightweight body armor.

In addition to semi-automatic rifles Barrett also produces machine guns, optics and ammunition today, including a proprietary design, the .416 Barrett, round based on the .50 BMG. Barrett has also recently developed the REC7 upper receiver for its AR-15-style rifles chambered in 6.8mm Remington SPC and is working on a variation of the M82A1 in 25mm ammo.
