The Bearman Industries C38 is a 2-round .38 Special Big Bore Derringer built around 2.75” superposed barrels. This was formerly the Cobra C38, but Bearman bought Cobra after it went out of business.

So back to the C38. It’s a cheap, minimalist gun noted for its very heavy hammer pull and heavy trigger pull. It has an alloy frame that gets a matte black finish. It has fixed sights on top and synthetic grips. The style is a mass of curves that is dominated by the grip frame’s comma shape. The hammer echoes the shape in reverse. Even the trigger guard is a stylized curve.

The C38 is designed to be simple to operate, inexpensive and easy to conceal for self-defense. However, it’s worth heeding owner’s manual warnings telling owners not to carry the gun around loaded.

Loading is easy. Pivot the right-side thumb lever, and the gun opens up upside down since the hinge point is at the tang. That’s it. Then you’re ready to go!

Derringers have their origins in guns by Henry Deringer. He actually spelled his last name with one “r” in the middle, not two. When John Wilkes Booth infamously assassinated Abraham Lincoln with one, journalists wrote the gun’s name with the double-R. And that “Derringer” name has stuck ever since.
