The Bearman Industries CB9 is a 2-round 9mm Luger Big Bore Derringer built around 2.75” over / under barrels. Overall length is 4.65”, and the gun weights about 14 ounces. This superposed barrel rimfire gun was formerly the Cobra CB9, but Bearman bought Cobra after it went out of business.

So back to the CB9. It’s a cheap, minimalist, right handgun noted for its very heavy hammer pull and heavy trigger pull. It has an alloy frame that depending on model gets silver Cerakote finish. It has fixed sights on top of a raised sight ridge. This gives the gun the chance to showcase a bit of aesthetic finesse as the ridge has side lightening cuts. The gun has wood grip or synthetic grip options. And under the Cobra name, there was also an all-black BBG9BB model that had a matte black frame and black wood grips.

The style is a mass of curves exemplified most by the grip frame’s comma shape. The hammer is one too. Even the trigger guard is a stylized curve.

The CB9 is designed to be simple to operate, inexpensive and easy to conceal for self-defense. However, heed the owner’s manual warnings telling owners not to carry the gun around loaded. Perhaps this gun’s best real-world application is as a conversation piece, etc.

To load the gun, pivot the right-side thumb lever, and the gun opens upside down since the hinge point is at the tang. Push out the extractor all the way and hold it steady while loading. Load. Then close it up. That’s it. Then you’re ready to go!

Derringers have their origins in guns by Henry Deringer. Note the spelling with one “r”. When John Wilkes Booth infamously assassinated Abraham Lincoln with one in 1865, contemporary news accounts wrote the gun’s name with the double-R “Derringer”. And that’s what has stuck since. Now the Derringer moniker with the incorrect spelling stands for this entire class of non-revolver, non-semi-automatic handguns.
