The Benelli Legacy: Four Decades and Counting

The Benelli legacy dates back to 1967 when the company, known as Benelli Armi S.P.A., was founded in Urbino, Italy. Benelli has made its mark in weapons manufacturing thanks to popular models like the M3 12 gauge and more recent M4 Super 90. The Benelli M4 shotgun was designed in 1998 and was quickly put in use by the U.S. Marine Corps in 1999. The weapon is also in use in places like Slovenia, the United Kingdom, Italy and Australia, and it has become a popular choice for home defense. The M4 shotgun was the first gas-operated shotgun produced by Benelli. What sets the weapon apart is that it uses a short-stroke "auto regulating gas operated" (ARGO) system that incorporates just four parts: two symmetrical shrouds and two small steel gas pistons. A cinch to operate in the field, the M4's modular assembly allows its user to exchange the barrel, buttstock and forearm with little effort. With a length of 40 inches and weight of 7.4 ounces, the Benelli M4 is relatively lightweight. Common accessories include night-vision sights, flashlights, scopes and laser illuminators.
