The German Blaser R8 bolt-action family’s new star is the R8 Ultimate, which debuted in 2020. The name gives away its apex position in the R8 family. The R8 bolt-actions combine a rich feature set with compelling results.

The Blaser precision trigger is desmodromic, meaning it uses a simple mechanical lever to operate, permitting it to work in the worst of cold, icy, weather or even if the gun is dirty. The trigger is light and crisp, without creep and actuates at just 2.0 pounds of pull pressure.

The gun’s metal parts are either rustproof materials or have an anti-corrosion finish. The cold hammer forged barrel is free-floating. It is bedded using the tough Blaser radial locking system that connects at 14 different points all around the barrel.

Blaser designed the R8 Ultimate’s thumbhole stock for extreme comfort. The thumbhole allows the thumb to rest in a natural position instead of keeping it more vertical as is normal with other stocks.

For safety, Blaser uses a manual cocking system. To decock the rifle, just press the cocking lever down. Removing the trigger guard prevents actuating the cocking lever, adding another level of safety. The R8 Ultimates also feature Illumination Control. The illuminated reticle turns on and off in conjunction with the position of the cocking slide.

R8s are easily taken down for maintenance and cleaning. To release R8 magazines, one must push not one, but both release buttons simultaneously, thus preventing accidental magazine drops.

The gun is made for quick and easy barrel swaps using Blaser barrels. Not only that, all the barrels use the Blaser Saddle Mount, which makes setting up the scopes easy too. The stocks swap easily from wooden to synthetic and vice-versa so that you can be ready for changing weather. And almost all R8s have left-hand versions with bolt-assembly, ejection and stocks all configured for lefties.

Blaser R8 Ultimate comes in two groups: the all-black R8 Ultimate Leather and the standard R8 Ultimate. The R8 Ultimate Leather differs by having leather tactile surfaces for the pistol grip, forend and cheek rest. Yet other than color, the two have absolutely the same specifications. Each is available with a silencer. The resulting models are the R8 Ultimate Silence Leather and the R8 Ultimate Silence.
