Browning BPS Field and Browning BPS Field Composite are two members of the Browning BPS family of reliable, smooth operating, fast and well-proven pump-action shotguns that first launched over 50 years ago. They’ve been newly redesigned for 2020, featuring a lightly tweaked stock, larger trigger guard and a redesigned forearm for better ergonomics.

Practically everything including the machined receiver and other key components is made from solid steel.

The standard BPS Field has a matte blue finished receiver, matte blue finished barrel and a sooth satin finished walnut forearm and stock. It comes in four models: 20-gauge 3” chamber with either a 26” or 28” barrel and a 12-gauge 3” chamber design also with either 26” or 28” barrels. Lengths are 46 3/4” and 48 3/4” respectively. The two 20-gauge guns weigh 7 pounds 0 ounces and 7 pounds 1 ounce respectively while the 12-gauge guns are slightly heavier at 7 pounds 10 ounces and 7 pounds 11 ounces respectively.

The BPS Field Composite is essentially the same except it has a polymer forearm and stock. Perhaps surprisingly, the weight of the 20-gauge BPS Field Composites is the same as corresponding walnut models, but the two 12-gauge models weigh an ounce more than their walnut stock fraternal twins. However, the Field Composite also has two 26” or 28” barrel models with 3.5” long chambers and thus 47 1/4” and 49 1/4” in overall length and 8 pounds 0 ounces and 8 pounds 1 ounce in respective measures.

Regardless of model, length of pull is 14 1/4”, drop at comb is 1 5/8” and drop at heel is 1 7/8”.

Internally, a pair of heat-treated steel slide bars ensure linear movements. The barrel and the forward portion of the receiver are crowned by a floating rib that moves independently of the barrel.

The gun has a nicely visible silver bead front sight. It also has a top-tang safety that’s easily actuated with either hand. In back is a thick, absorbent and comfortable Inflex recoil pad that cleverly redirects some of the felt recoil downward.

The BPS Field uses bottom ejection, making it user-friendly for both right-hand and left-hand shooters. This also helps weather proof performance since rain won’t enter as it can in guns designed with traditional side ejection ports.

The BPS Field uses back-bored barrels for higher exit velocities, tighter patters and fewer deformed pellets. Moreover, BPS shotguns use Invector-Plus interchangeable choke tubes and come with Full, Modified and Improved Cylinder chokes.

BPS Field guns are 4+1 capacity using 2 3/4” and 3+1 using either 3" or 3 1/2” ammo. The guns come with a three-shot magazine plug.

The Browning BPS Field pump-action shotguns are made by Miroku Corporation in Japan.
