The Browning Maxus 12-gauge shotguns embody Browning’s natural talent for powerful shotguns with sweeping, racy, elegant lines and reliability. Browning currently has eight Maxus shotguns in full production and another dozen in limited production. They vary in their stocks that span a beautiful variety of art deco gloss walnut, matte black polymer and camouflaged polymer. All are crested by a nearly architectural vent rib. Some combine classic styling and “show off to your friends” receiver engraving with fiber optic sights while other models have camouflage, bead sights, etc. Here we’ll sweep through the ones in production.

While options abound on finish and materials, the typical Maxus has two to three barrel lengths of 26”, 28” and 30”. The chambers can be either 3” or 3.5” long. The overall lengths are 21” longer than the barrel, and thus 47”, 49” and 51” respectively. And weights increase by just one feathery ounce per two inches. They are thus are 6 pounds 15 ounces, 7 pounds and 7 pounds 1 ounce for the three different lengths.

Regardless of model or barrel length, length of pull is 14 ¼”, drop at comb is 1 ¾” while drop at heel is 2”. Magazine capacity is four 2 ¾” shells bringing overall capacity to 4+1. Each is crested by a 1/4” wide rib. A beautiful design touch is how the rib’s bridge pillars vary in arc with the widest being nearest the receiver. The arcs get progressively shorter and lower from back to front sight as the rib moves toward the barrel.

Maxus shotguns use Browning’s Power Drive gas system that does a marvelous job of absorbing felt recoil. These guns come with up to five interchangeable chokes: F, IM, M, IC and SK.

Maxus guns have clever design details such as the Speed Lock Forearm that replaces the common magazine cap. Undo a latch and the magazine comes loose for cleaning or storage. And Speed Load Plus helps load or unload shells so much faster than doing things the old fashioned way.
