Browning Silver shotguns are a lineup of single-barrel 12-gauge guns. They blend Browning’s active valve gas system with other modern features and classic style to deliver a low recoil, low maintenance firearm. These magazine-fed guns handle 2 3/4” (4+1 capacity), 3” (3+1) and 3 1/2” (3+1) loads.

Remarkably, Browning has been making auto-loading shotguns for over a century.

There are currently seven Browning Silvers in full production and a few more in limited production. It is ironic that of the full production models, only two have anything that looks like silver. Or perhaps it speaks to the design’s versatility that the rest have various permutations of black or camouflaged receivers and barrels, wooden, black polymer or camouflaged polymer forends and buttstocks.

These types are known for their mild humpback (Browning’s term) profile lightweight aluminum receiver design. The shape promotes fast sighting because the sight plane is longer. But these guns also have a bulging magazine/forearm that makes for good grip.

Each ships with three choke tubes, meaning full, improved cylinder and modified, that work with the Invector-Plus system.

These shotguns have an active valve gas system that is self-adjusting to manage different loads to manage the action. Excess gases are vented out via the valve system and forearm rather than channeling thrust back into the chamber. This means less fouling of the receiver. The result is clean, reliable performance.

Silvers also have a large upside down triangular crossbolt safety that artfully covers the join between the back of the trigger and the receiver. The carrier release is just below the ejection port and the loading port.

The removable trigger guard that forms a perfect racetrack oval. Inside is Browning’s gold trigger. The entire trigger assembly can easily be removed for maintenance and/or cleaning.

Both the forearm and grip area are checkered for comfortable and confident grip when you need it.

Browning says that a thick recoil pad isn’t necessary with the Browning Silvers, but goes on to provide a lovely, thick one anyway. It’s contoured and has recoil-absorbing latticework scaffolding at back.

While options abound on finish and materials, the typical Silver model has at a minimum 12-gauge but sometimes also 20-gauage choices. 12-gauge guns have two barrel lengths of 26” or 28”. The chambers can be either 3” or 3.5” long and length of pull is 14.25”. The overall lengths are 21” longer than the barrel and thus 47” and 49” respectively.

20-gauge models have 26” or 28” barrels, but overall lengths are .25” shorter, and thus 46.75” and 48.75” respectively. There is a Field Micro Midas version with 24” and 26” barrel versions with a 13” length of pull and 43.75” and 45.75” overall lengths respectively.

Regardless of model or barrel length, each is crested by a 1/4” wide rib. A beautiful design touch is the way the rib’s bridge pillars vary in arc with the widest being nearest the receiver. The arcs get progressively shorter and lower as the rib advances toward the barrel.
