The Bushmaster XM-15 lineup includes about 10 different AR-15 type guns. Except where noted, these matte black ARs share characteristics including forged 7075-T6 aluminum alloy upper and lower receivers, chrome-lined 4150 alloy steel barrels and 1:9" twist ratios. They also share birdcage flash suppressors and adjustable length-of-pull stocks.

The base barrels are 16” carbine-length. But the range includes also 20”, 24” and 26” lengths. These are mixed and matched with A2 and A3 type accessories such as A2 stocks and carry handle uppers.

The 16” barrels are “Superlight” and made of 4150 alloy that’s further ferritic nitrocarburized (FNC) treated for durability and ruggedness. This process literally imbues the ferrous porous surface with a strong wear-resistant protective layer.

The birdcage flash suppressor mounts via a 1/2x28 TPI thread. The 16” barrel guns measure 35” in overall length except the 16” M4A2 Type Patrolman’s Carbine measuring 32.5” overall. The 16” M4A3 Type Patrolman’s Carbine with Quad has a free-floating aluminum quad handguard. These weigh 5.2 to 8.2 pounds depending on configuration/model.

Several 16” models are tagged with an ORC ("optics ready carbine") or QRC ("quick response carbine") moniker. While nicknamed “flat-top”, their upper receiver tops aren’t flat. They lack the otherwise standard carry handle but feature an integrated 12-slot MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail. They lack the iron sights of the other models. Some ship with a quick-detach mount red-dot optic instead and some came without a red-dot (but were ready to receive one). They come standard with a 6-position M4-style adjustable rear stock one can set to one’s favorite LOP. They also have a slightly faster 1:8” twist ratio.

The 20” barrel target rifles measure 39.5” overall. They have heavy contour barrels. Between their greater length and heavy contours, weight climbs to 8.46 pounds for the 20” Target Rifle – A2 and 8.78 pounds for the 20” Target Rifle – A3.

Bushmasters were available with 10 or 30-round magazines, but optional 5 and 20-round mags are also available.
