Boonville, Missouri-based CMMG produces an extensive lineup of short-barrel AR-type guns. It tags each with 100, 200 or 300 series. Though not obvious at first, a little sleuthing provides answers to what these tags mean.

The 100 series are the base models with A2 birdcage flash suppressors, A2 pistol grips and either 6-position or fixed buttstocks. The mid-range 200 series CMMGs add upgrades such as the single-chamber SV muzzle brake, Magpul MOE pistol grip and either CMMG’s own RIPSTOCK or RIPBRACE as the buttstock. Finally the high-end 300 series is fully loaded. You get everything in the 200 series, plus the MAGPUL grip, ambidextrous controls and sling points, CMMG’s RIPSTOCK or PRS stock, and a premium two-stage trigger. Anything else? Yes, perhaps best of all, there is a choice of ten Cerakote colors to swathe the 300 series guns.

So now back to the Banshee 100’s specifics. There are currently 32 variants in production. No matter the configuration, matte-black dominates comfortably.

The upper and lower receiver are 7075-T6 aluminum, the kind invented by the Japanese military before World War II and put to good use in their long-range aircraft because it coupled light weight and tensile strength. The receivers receive a Type III hard coat anodization to form a strong, protective outer layer. The 4140 chrome moly barrel gets a salt bath nitride finish for increased durability and corrosion resistance.

Many components are made in-house by CMMG. Examples include the trigger, trigger guard and M-LOK handguard.

The CMMG RML7 M-LOK handguard is free-floating for increased accuracy. It too gets Type III hard coat anodization. The lineup features a CMMG Mil-Spec charging handle, CMMG Mil-Spec safety selector, an A2 birdcage muzzle brake and a simple, but classic, A2 style pistol grip. The rifle version adds a CMMG M4 6-position buttstock.

There are both pistol and rifle versions for each of the following chamberings:

10 mm, 5.7x28 mm (Conversion), 9 mm (Conversion), 9 mm (SigP320), .458 SOCOM, 22 LR, 300 BLK, 308 WIN, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, 5.56x45 mm, 5.7x28 mm (FN), 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39 mm, 9 mm (Colt) and 9 mm (Glock)! Whew!

Each has a “pistol” version that has the stock tube, but no butt stock. Each rifle version also has a buttstock, which adds a nominal amount to the price. Barrel lengths range from 8” (18 choices), 8.5” (2), 9” (2), 10” (2) and 12.5” (8). The receiver design varies depending on ammunition/magazine types.

Let’s use the Banshee 100, MkGs, 9mm as an example to gather dimensions. First, as is probably obvious, this is the 9x19 mm version that uses the MkGs receiver designed to work with Glock stick magazines. And indeed, it comes with a double-stack 33-round Glock mag, which has a durable polymer case and numbered witness holes.

The 8” long barrel has a medium taper, a 1:10 ratio twist and is fronted by a 1/2"x28 TPI thread. In pistol guise, its unloaded weight is 4 pounds 12 ounces, and it stretches 23.9”. The rifle variant is the same except that with the buttstock, it weighs 5 pounds 3 ounces unloaded and measures 24” to 26” depending on stock setting.

The CMMG Banshee 100 is an interesting short-barrel range of ARs useful for tight quarters where maneuverability and portability are important.
