The Made in USA CMMG Banshee 200 short-barrel AR-types are useful for tight quarters where maneuverability and portability are important.

Boonville, Missouri-based CMMG produces an extensive lineup of short-barrel AR-type guns. It tags each with 100, 200 or 300 series. The 200s fit in between the base 100 series and the fully-loaded 300 series guns. The mid-range 200 series has upgrades over the 100 series such as a single-chamber SV muzzle brake, Magpul MOE pistol grip and either CMMG’s own RIPSTOCK or RIPBRACE as the buttstock.

So now back to the Banshee 200’s specifics. There are currently 32 variants in production. In fact, these variants appear to match the 100 series exactly. No matter the configuration, matte-black dominates comfortably.

The upper and lower receiver are 7075-T6 aluminum. The receivers are Type III hard coat anodized for a strong, protective outer layer. The 4140 chrome moly barrel gets a salt bath nitride finish for increased durability and corrosion resistance.

Many components such as the trigger, trigger guard and M-LOK handguard are made in-house by CMMG. The CMMG RML7 M-LOK handguard is free-floating for increased accuracy. It has the typical octagon with a raised roof cross-section. A Picatinny rail crests the top and continues over onto the upper receiver. The 3, 6 and 9 o’clock sides have M-LOK slots. The RML7 also gets Type III hard coat anodization. The lineup features a CMMG Mil-Spec charging handle and a CMMG Mil-Spec safety selector.

The muzzle is fronted by a single-chamber square chamber SV muzzle brake. At bottom is a textured Magpul MOE pistol grip. And, in back, is either CMMG’s own RIPSTOCK or RIPBRACE as the buttstock.

Just like the 100 series, the 200 series has two versions for each of the following chamberings:

10 mm, 5.7x28 mm (Conversion), 9 mm (Conversion), 9 mm (SigP320), .458 SOCOM, 22 LR, 300 BLK, 308 WIN, 40 S&W, 45 ACP, 5.56x45 mm, 5.7x28 mm (FN), 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39 mm, 9 mm (Colt) and 9 mm (Glock)!

Each has a “pistol” version that has the stock tube, but no butt stock. Each rifle version also has a buttstock, which adds a nominal amount to the price. Barrel lengths range from 8” (18 choices), 8.5” (2), 9” (2), 10” (2) and 12.5” (8). The receiver design varies depending on ammunition/magazine types.

Let’s use the Banshee 200, MkGs, 9mm for sample dimensions. First, as is probably obvious, this is the 9x19 mm version that uses the MkGs receiver designed to work with Glock stick magazines. Thus it comes with a double-stack 33-round Glock mag, which has a durable polymer case and numbered witness holes.

The barrel has a medium taper, is 8” long with a 1:10 ratio twist and is fronted by a 1/2"x28 TPI thread. In pistol guise, it has a 6-position CMMG Standard RipBrace. This 14 ounce brace ranges from 7? collapsed up to 9.5? in length extended. It also has an ambidextrous sling plate. This pistol’s unloaded weight is 5 pounds 12 ounces, and it stretches 24.4” with the brace in collapsed position.

The rifle variant is the same, except in back, it has a very minimal L-shape 6-position CMMG RipStock that includes an ambidextrous sling plate. It weighs 5 pounds 4 ounces unloaded and measures 24.8” to 26.8” depending on stock setting.
