The CVA Buckhorn 209 Magnum .50 guns with their 24” barrels have created and still retain many black powder aficionados. Though out of production now, back in their day, these accurate conventional in-line single-shot muzzleloaders were paragons of affordability and reliability. Brand new with a scope they ran about $240. Not bad. No wonder the Buckhorn was very popular.

Even now, the gun delivers a nice used gun value. The gun’s precision rifled barrel is 24” long with a slow 1:28” twist ratio. It’s held in place by dual retention points and has a bullet guiding muzzle. The flat-shooting gun is designed for 50 to 150 grain Magnum charges.

The high-performance gun had a newly designed trigger and double retention points. It uses Modern 209 primers as the ignition source.

The CVA Buckhorn has a thumb safety at the back by the bolt-arm. Some come standard equipped with factory installed Illuminator fiber-optic open sights. The gun’s stock was radical for its class when the model debuted and, among other things, had anti-slip Grip Dot panels.

CVA, which originally stood for Connecticut Valley Arms, Inc., was founded in 1971 and later bought in 1999 by Blackpowder Products of Duluth, Georgia. The company continues to make fine quality black power muzzleloaders.
