CZ Pistol History
CZ-USA is a subsidiary of Ceska Zbrojovka a.s. Uhersky Brod (CZUB) of the Czech Republic. CZ proper began production in 1937 in the town of Strakonice, making aircraft machine guns, military CZ pistols, and small-bore rifles. During World War II, the plant fell under Nazi control and was forced to repair Axis military arms. After the war, the plant continued to manufacture military and civilian arms. The company survived reorganization in the '50s, mergers in the '70s and '80s and restructuring in the '90s. CZ-USA is the company's exclusive U.S. importer. The subsidiary has been headquartered in Kansas City, Kansas, since 1998. All distribution and repair work are conducted in Kanas City, and parts inventory is also located there, including those for such CZ pistols as the CZ 52 and CZ 75.
Popular CZ Pistols
The most popular CZ pistol is the CZ 75, so named because it was introduced in 1975. It was one of the original "Wonder Nines," easy-to-fire 9mm pistols that gained advocacy for adoption by police forces in the 1980s when revolvers were still widely used. As of 2007, more than one million had been built.
It was designed by Josef and Frantisek Koucky. It can be fitted to fire 9x19mm Parabellum, 9x21mm or .40 S&W cartridges. It has a short recoil with tilting barrel. It is effective from 25 meters. The gun's popularity led CZ to create more than 30 variants of the gun. There are also nearly 20 clones and copies by other manufacturers.
