Century Arms of Delray Beach, Florida has long imported surplus arms from other countries such as Russia and Romania. As of 2019, it is now producing its own 7.62x39mm AK-47 semi-automatic rifle, the Century Arms VSKA.

The VSKA is made largely out of machined S7 shock-resisting tool steel that’s well known for its impact strength while being excellent material for manufacturing things like receivers. Impressively, Century Arms is now even ISO9001:2015 quality certified.

It’s easy to forget this isn’t an original weapon from the late 1940s or early 1950s. The devil is in the details. For instance, the wood upper and lower handguards and buttstock are made of American Maple. That said, Century Arms also makes a slightly less expensive version of this gun. It’s the VSKA Synthetic. It is all matte black and uses polymer upper and lower handguards and buttstock.

In both cases, the gun uses a 16.5” long barrel, has an overall length of 37.25”. Perhaps surprisingly, the wood version weighs 7.50 pounds while the synthetic actually comes in a bit heavier at 7.70 pounds!

Now, let’s head back to their commonalities. At the bottom is Century Arms’ own American-made single-stage RAK-1 enhanced trigger group (hammer, trigger, disconnector, etc.).

The sights are Standard AKM sights. The front sight is adjustable for windage and elevation, and the muzzle is fronted by a compensator.

The barrel is made of 4150 chrome-moly steel. The bolt is carburized 4140 steel, the receiver is stamped out of 1/16” thick steel, while the feed ramp and front trunnion are both S7 tool steel parts. Finally, the gun’s metal surfaces have a manganese phosphate finish that bonds chemically for increased durability and protection.

The gun ships with a classic ribbed and curved 30-round detachable magazine.
