Charter Arms History
Charter Arms was founded in 1964 by Douglas McClennahan. McClennahan used skills learned while working for Colt, High Standard, and Sturm Ruger to forge his own identity in the gun world. His first design, The Undercover, was a .38 special, five shot revolver. The gun weighed just 16 ounces thanks to having the fewest moving parts for a revolver in the world. It also boasted a hammer block system to protect against accidental discharges. David Ecker joined Charter Arms in 1967 in a 50-50 business agreement with lifelong friend McClennahan.
Charter Arms Basics
Today the Ecker family still runs the business, out of Shelton, Connecticut. The company calls it the heart of New England's 'Gun Valley' – the cradle of the American firearms industry. Charter Arms are 100 percent American made. They continue to be the smallest and lightest one-piece frame revolvers on the market.
Charter Arms has become synonymous with simplicity of design. All barrels are machined with eight groves instead of six for higher velocity and flatter trajectories, resulting in better accuracy. Along with simplicity and accuracy, Charter prides itself on safety. All their revolvers feature blocked hammer systems that will not fire unless the trigger is held in full rear position. In fact, almost every other manufacturer uses the hammer block system that Charter Arms developed. The company added two new products in 2016: Nitride finishing, a proprietary process that makes their revolvers harder while reducing friction and wear. They also developed a compact version of the .44 Bulldog named Boomer, which is specifically designed for concealed carry.
