Civil War Weapons History

Vast political and historical implications aside, the Civil War is sometimes referred to as the first modern war, in reference to the technology it was fought with. Not only were advances in medicine (morphine) and communications (the telegraph) of drastic importance, but the introduction of early repeating weapons, ironclad warships, the rifling of gun barrels, and the mass production of Civil War weapons, just to name a few developments, changed warfare forever. Civil War soldiers and officers alike carried some type of blade, whether it was a sword, sabre or Bowie knife. Colt firearms featured prominently in the Civil War, particularly the Colt 1851 Navy revolver, the Colt M1861 Navy revolver and the Colt Dragoon revolver. The Remington Model 1858 was another revolver popular with the troops. Among shoulder-arms, the most commonly used rifle was the Springfield Model 1861, a Minié-type rifled musket respected for its range, accuracy, and reliability. Early in the war it was common to see Confederate forces using shotguns and hunting rifles due to the lack of military weapons available.
