The Colt M16A1 Retro Reissue 5.56×45mm NATO 30+1 AR-15 type faithfully replicates the Vietnam-era M16A1 except that it’s a semi-automatic instead of fully automatic arm. The M16A1 was a gentle evolution of the original M16 albeit with a 30-round magazine instead of the originals’ 20-round mag, a bolt-assist to manually forward jammed rounds (or peak inside the chamber or…) and a chrome-plated bore for improved corrosion resistance and durability.

The all-matte black rifle was the US Army’s prime infantry tool during the Vietnam War, and then it soldiered on beyond that conflict. Various others, including Colt’s own M4A1 SOCOM and XM177E2 Retro Carbine, have more modern features such as Picatinny rails, more modern handguards, etc. But not the M16A1 Retro Reissue. It still retains the a carrying handle, triangular cross-section handguard and the long 20” chrome-lined barrel with the 1:12” twist ratio that neatly echo the original.

On top, you get an A1 fixed front and rear sight and underneath an A1 pistol grip. There is also a perfectly placed safety selector switch. The rear has the classic fixed stock. The gun also has a front sling swivel afore the handguard and another one almost at the butt heel. It’s a very compelling piece of work for anyone who loves nostalgia.
