DoubleStar Corporation of Lexington, Kentucky makes seven .45 ACP 8+1 capacity 1911 semi-automatics that it diligently hand-fits together.

These 1911s come in three sizes: full-size Government C2Gs (two models) plus another full-size Government called PhD (for personal home defense), mid-size Commander C2G (two models) and subcompact-size Officer C2Ss (two models).

All seven are single-action .45 ACP caliber semi-automatic pistols with forged frames, stainless steel match quality barrels made by Storm Lake and black ion bond DLC (diamond-like coated) surfaces.

On top they have Novak Lo-Mount 3 dot sights. In back, they feature loop hammers made by Wilson Combat, beveled and lowered ejection ports, front and rear diagonal slide serrations, beautifully upturned beavertails and grip safeties.

All primary controls are either along the center (e.g. the grip safety) or on the left (thumb safety, slide stop and magazine release). Flanking the grip is a pair of good looking and comfortable black carbon fiber VZ ETC-Frag grips that have rhomboid hatching. The left grip has a finger recess behind the magazine release.

These guns have beautiful triple ported solid Greider Precision V-Series match triggers with 3.5 to 4.5 pound trigger pulls.

Let’s examine the individual models. The two conceal carry C2S models are smallest. They have the shortest grip, shortest barrel (3.5”) and shortest slide. Overall length (7.4”) and height are also the least. One has a bobtail butt while the other has the standard butt.

The two C2 models are next. They have all the same features as the C2S models coupled to a longer barrel and slide. Standard dimensions include a 4.25” long barrel, 8.00” overall length and full-size frame. Just like the C2S models, one has a bobtail butt while the other has the standard butt.

The three full-size models are last. Two are C2Gs and the third is the more affordable PhD. They have the C2’s frame, but an even longer 5.00” barrel and 8.75” overall length. Perhaps surprisingly, these models also use the 8-round magazine of the smaller ones. The C2Gs have standard butts, but otherwise match their smaller siblings. One of the two C2Gs has a three-slot Picatinny rail under the return spring housing.

So, what of the PhD? It’s far less expensive by virtue of having a cast, rather than forged, frame. It uses less expensive MAGPUL MOE 1911 TSP grip panels. The TSP stands for texturized surface projections. Rather than structured rhomboid hatching, these heavy-duty polymer panels evoke elephant skin.

The PhD has a simplified slide with no front serrations and three wide, forward-leaning, rear serrations. The coating is black Parkerized. And the sights are XS Express sights dovetailed neatly into the slide in both front and back. The front one is a tritium night sight and the rear one is a low, parcel-shelf type that is cantilevered right to the slide’s rear edge, providing an extended sight radius.
