The Desert Tech MDR, MDRX, MDRX-SE and MDRX-COM semi-auto bullpups derive their acronym from Micro Dynamic Rifle. The MDR is a compact 16” barreled bullpup with .223 Wylde (1:8 twist ratio), .308 (1:10) and .300 BLK (1:6) caliber options. In all three cases, overall length is an ultra-compact 26.2”, width is 1.69” for the body (and 2.33” including the bolt, etc.), height is 7.86” and weight comes in at relatively light 8.3 pounds.

The 20” barrel MDRX has .223 Wylde, .308 and 6.5 Creedmore choices. These just pass 30” in overall length though width and height are the same as above. There is even an MDRX-SE (side-eject) version available that cuts weight by about .5 pounds. Cleverly, the side-eject can be set to either left- or right-hand configurations.

Regardless of barrel length, the .308 Win and 6.5 are available with 10-round or 20-round P-MAG magazines. The others have 10-round, 20-round and 30-round capabilities.

The MDRX-COM (meaning “compliant”) models also have 20” barrels. They come standard with a 10-round magazine, a shark fin grip, and a muzzle compensator. They have the same choices 6.5 Creedmore, .308 Win, and .223 Wylde caliber choices as the standard 20” barrel model.

As befits the Desert Tech name, the gun comes standard in FDE. This means the upper and lower receiver, forend, stock and grip are all FDE. Everything else like the barrel, flash hider, trigger, various controls and fasteners, textured buttpad and magazine are matte black.

This portable wonder trades aesthetics for modularity and flexibility. The bullpup configuration makes several things relatively easy, like creating something with an ideal balance and usable in tight quarters. The MDR is fully ambidextrous. So, it combines ambidextrous controls with forward ejection.

MDR embodies ergonomics. All the operations are intuitive, the grip positions are textured and nicely placed, and the forend that hangars the black barrel includes an integrated hand stop in front. The receiver/forend includes a very long, integrated, MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail so you have plenty of room to place your accessories exactly where you want them.

The barrel is free-floating. The trigger has a 4.7-pound pull weight. The trigger guard is oversized. While the MDR has plenty of curves, the trigger guard’s angular contours look just right as well. The magazine is black and has block patterns that go nicely with those on the grip and under the forend.

The MDR features a black nitrited three-prong Raiden flash hider. The MDR has this CNC machined flash hider instead of a ported muzzle brake since it is better optimized for confined places. It also features a non-reciprocating charging handle.

There are several conversion kits available that cover 5.56x45mm NATO, 7.62x51mm NATO and .300 BLK. These include a chassis, barrel, bolt head, magazine well adapter and magazine.
