ELCAN History

ELCAN, or Ernst Leitz Canada, was a family optics and electronics company that is now owned by American defense contractor, Raytheon. ELCAN’s history dates back to 1848, when Carl Kellner founded an optical institute in Wetzler, Germany, to develop lenses and microscopes. After Kellner’s death, Ernst Leitz Sr., one of the original staff members, joined Kellner's widowed wife in managing the company. Leitz was a kind employer who introduced health insurance, pensions, and housing for his employees. By the late 1800s, ELCAN, then called Ernst Leitz GmbH, produced over 10,000 microscopes and expanded their workforce to 120 people.

After the advent of 35mm film, Ernst Leitz GmbH revolutionized photography with their Leica camera and became an essential provider to journalists, professionals, and artists. During Hitler’s regime, Leitz and his daughter, Elise, safely transferred their Jewish employees overseas, supported by the firm’s other branches. This act of kindness was known as the Leica Freedom Train. After World War II, the factory chose to relocate for fear of Soviets knocking on their doors. They chose Midland, Canada, for its cultural base, great resources, and proximity to major markets.

In the 1970s, the ELCAN name was established and began marketing its services for Canadian military and US Navy aerial reconnaissance applications. In 1990, Hughes Aircraft Company bought ELCAN and merged their machinery and technology divisions in Midland. ELCAN’s name changed again to Hughes Leitz Optical Technologies.

In 1997, Hughes Aircraft sold their defense business to Raytheon. Because of the global reputation with the ELCAN name, Hughes Leitz Optical Technologies reclaimed their ELCAN heritage, and ELCAN Optical Technologies was established. ELCAN is currently the largest and most integrated North American company with complete optical, electronic, and mechanical capabilities.

ELCAN Specter Specifications

ELCAN Specters are currently sold through Armament Technology, and come in DR (dual reticle), TR (triple reticle) and fixed optic styles for rifles and machine guns. ELCAN Specter DR and TR sights are popular because of their ability to quickly switch magnifications. Normally, shooters with fixed optics would remove and switch optics for the desired magnification, but not with ELCAN Specters. These optics switch between close quarters and ranged fire modes with a simple lever or dial adjustment.
