FN FAL History & Specs

The FN FAL semi-automatic rifle was based on designs created during the late years of World War II but came to fruition after the war, when it was adopted by NATO forces. Throughout the 1950s and later this rifle competed world-wide with the AK series of rifles by firing more powerful rounds. The FN FAL (or Fusil Automatique Léger – “light automatic rifle") was originally presented by Great Britain to the US government as a candidate to replace the United States' T25 rifles. The hope was that the armed forces of NATO countries would share the FN FAL as their standard issue rifles.

The US countered however with the request that the FN FAL be redesigned for the .30 Light Rifle cartridge. Eventually Britain chose the FN FAL for its armed forces but the US continued its own rifle testing (eventually landing on the M14 design). In compromise the .30 Light Rifle cartridge became standard rifle ammunition for NATO forces and the FN FAL was redesigned to accommodate it and become NATO's “right arm of the free world."

Today over two million FN FAL rifles have been produced and they've seen service in over 90 countries. By the 1980s demand for the decades-old FAL was falling and many rifles were decommissioned and demilitarized to be resold to the US civilian market. FN FALs were demilitarized by destroying their upper receivers so they could no longer be used as fully automatic rifles. Many collectors and enthusiasts have rebuilt the resold FAL part kits with new semi-automatic upper receivers to create legal and functional semi automatic rifles.
