The Franchi Momentum bolt-action rifle sits in a nice niche of being a stylish Italian-made arm that focuses on ergonomics. These guns come in two colors (black or FDE), two main sizes and six calibers (.243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield and the mighty .300 Winchester Magnum).

These six calibers fall into two broad sizes. The .243 Winchester, .270 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield all feature 22” long barrels, 42.3” overall lengths and weigh 6.6 pounds. In contrast, both the 6.5 Creedmoor and .300 Winchester Magnum are two inches longer with have 24” long barrels, 44.3” overall lengths. This extra dimensions nudge weight just a tad up to 6.7 pounds.

Except the 300 Winchester Magnum, which is a 3+1 capacity firearm, the rest are 4+1s. The .243 Winchester and .270 Winchesters have 1 to 10” twists. The 6.5 Creedmore has a 1 to 8” twist while the other three have 1 to 11” twists.

Each of these has a free-floating 5/8 x 24 TPI threaded barrel with a 14” length of pull. The crisp single-stage trigger is very light with just two to four pounds of trigger pull.

Momentum barrels are cold-hammer-forged out of chrome-molybdenum. They’re also matte-finished and free-floating for maximum accuracy.

The Italians have spent centuries teaching the world about style, and this gun is no exception. Look along the forend past the ergonomic pistol grip all the way back to the buttstock to see a collection of styling wings, flarings and curves. That they are so elegant belies the fact that they are also functional. For instance, the bolt is fluted, but instead of horizontal columns, the fluting twists gently around the bolt. At the bolt’s business end are three large locking logs that create a powerful, perfect join with a single 60-degree throw of the long bolt. At the other is a two-position safety. The two sling mounts are recessed into the frontend and buttstock.

Even the magazine is interesting. The magazine release is in the curved trigger guard. Use it to reveal a hinged-floorplate magazine that’s almost flush with the stock.

The Franchi Momentum’s combo option adds a two-piece base Burris Fullfield II 3-9 x 40mm scope that bridges neatly over the ejection port. The others come without a scope but are compatible with all Remington 700 type two-piece base models.

Franchi USA is based in Pocomoke, MD, but the original company is Franchi of the industrial city of Brescia in northern Italy. That company became making guns in 1868 during the period of Italian reunification.

At the back, the polymer stock is backed by a TSA Recoil Pad that is designed to absorb fifty percent of felt recoil.
