Galil Rifle Basics
Galil rifles are a family of firearms manufactured by Israel Weapon Industries, Ltd., (formerly Israel Military Industries, Ltd.). Galil rifles were originally designed by Yaacov Lior and Yisrael Galil, who also had a hand in creating the Uzi and was known in the military by the nickname Father of the Rifle. Galil rifles come in four basic configurations: standard rifle length (AR), carbine (SAR), compact (MAR) and light machine gun (ARM). They all are gas-operated with rotating bolts and the ability to fire between 630 and 750 rounds per minute. Depending on the configuration, Galil rifles accept either 5.56x45mm NATO or 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges.
The standard Galil boasts a high-impact plastic handguard and pistol grip. It has a right-side folding metal skeleton stock, which is standard for all Galil varieties. It uses 5.56mm cartridges and weighs 8.7 pounds. The barrel on the Galil AR is 18.1 inches long; the stock is 38.9 inches long when extended and is 29.2 when folded.
The SAR carbine, known as the Glilon, has a shorter barrel (13.07 inches) and correspondingly shorter piston and gas tubes that are unique to the gun. It weighs 8.27 pounds and has a 33-inch extended stock (24.2 folded). It also uses 5.56 ammo.
The Galil ARM light machine gun comes factory equipped with a carrying handles, folding bipod and a larger, wooden handguard. The wooden design stays cooler during extended firing sessions and has grooves to accept the bipod for storage. When folded, the bipod becomes a chute for rapid magazine replacement.
The Galil MAR compact carbine is the most recent addition to the family of rifles. Known as the Micro Galil, it is a reduced version of the SAR, with reduced barrel, receiver, piston, gas tube, and fore grip. It is fed from a 35-round steel magazine, which can be clipped to increase reload speed. It has four fire settings: S (safety), A (automatic fire), B (three-round burst), and R (semiautomatic). It is easily equipped with accessories, including night vision, daytime optics, lowlight sights, a vertical forward grip, silencer, and nylon sling. It can also be designed with a bolt catch, plastic magazines (to make it even lighter) and an enlarged trigger guard for use with gloves.
