The Glenfield Model 75 .22 LR semi-automatic carbine was an evolution of the Marlin Glenfield Model 60. This Model 75 weighed 4.5 pounds. It had an 18” barrel and a 9-round tube magazine. Thus capacity was 9+1. It eschewed the Model 60’s bolt release lever but came standard with a crossbolt safety and sling swivels. Model 75 production ran from the late 1960s to about 1975. An improved Glenfield Model 75C with an extended 14-round tube magazine that went to the end of the barrel entered production after that.

The Model 60 debuted in 1960 and has been in continuous production ever since. With over 11,000,000 units shipped, it’s one of the most popular rifles ever. Thus developing a carbine version was a pretty easy choice and, presumably, a commensurately simple project.

Both the Model 75 and Model 75C share traits such as the beautifully varnished wooden birch Monte Carlo stock. The gun has not one superfluous line. Instead, the “form follows function” design ethos harnessed here means a single long wooden stock that integrates the forend and buttstock into one piece and the built-in cheek rest. The purity continues to what we don’t see on the stock. There are no dovetail pennants or grip checkering, no logos that jump out, etc. The trigger guard is all curves: an upside down ramp in the front and a racetrack oval inside. The trigger is a classic dangling crescent.

Everything else on the gun is basically blued. It has adjustable iron sights. The length of pull can be adjusted a tad via a buttplate spacer. The sling swivels are under the barrel band by the forend and under the buttstock.

Unlike more modern tube fed semi-automatics, the Model 75’s tube is not fed from underneath, but pulled out from the front, loaded and then inserted back into the forend.

The Model 75 has now out of production, and it’s a bit hard to find, so it is becoming a popular collector’s item.
